Dark, mysterious, savoury and subtle-flavoured brazils are prized for a unique crunchy flavor. Brazil nuts are native to South America. Grown very much like coconuts, brazil nuts have an extremely wood-like shell which, when cracked open, reveals 12 - 24 nuts inside.
Brazil nuts have a high fat content, and must be kept cold or frozen to maintain a shelf life. Even the in-shell brazils, need to be cold or frozen to keep freshness. In 100g. of brazils you will get, nutritionally, 12g. of protein, 61g. of fat, 2.8g. of iron, 180mg of calcium and 4.2 mg of zinc.
Brazils are often prized raw for snacking & used in some Deluxe mixed nuts roasted and salted. The processing is very individual as to taste. Many people will use in-shell brazils to decorate a meal becasue of their unusual shape and texture. You must be careful of brazils because of the fat content.
